Creating Creativity
One of the main goals of Positive Psychology is to increase wellbeing through positive interventions. This paper views creativity through its lens, focusing not on what barriers to creativity can be removed, but on what positive elements can be introduced to foster creativity. It refines the definition of creativity and takes a more complex view of the creative process. It reviews the literature on internal attributes frequently ascribed to creative people. These attributes are conventionally divided into categories such as personality traits, character strengths, values, etc. This paper takes the view that, for the purpose of designing and implementing interventions for enhancing creativity, it is more fruitful to break them into two distinct groups: needs (including desires, aspirations, proclivities, etc.) and capacities (internal and external strengths, aptitudes and resources). Based on this model, a number of interventions for cultivating creativity are recommended.
