The Optimism Effect: How Optimism Fuels Women's Well-being in Midlife
This capstone explores the elements of positive psychology and how the science can support midlife flourishing for women. While all ingredients are essential for optimal well-being, this literature review delves deeply into the impact of optimism. During the midlife stage, lasting roughly twenty-five years, women experience significant changes, challenges, stressors, and opportunities. Women are often stretched as they care for themselves, their aging parents, and children. Personal health, identity, sense of purpose, and relationships are also in constant flux. Optimism, a well-researched trait within the field of positive psychology, can serve as a vital protective factor during this period of life. This paper blends narrative with science as it reviews the role optimism plays in physical and mental health, relationships, coping strategies, resilience, and goals. This review offers insights for coaches, therapists, and others supporting women during this transitional time.
